TfP Partners contribute to richer literature on contemporary peace and security challenges and threats and proffer innovative approaches, through the development and dissemination of key publications


For the first half of 2024, the TfP Partners produced key publications to enrich literature on thematic issues in peace and security, contribute to debates and knowledge gaps, and to provide new insights and recommendations to address the complex and evolving threats confronting the continent.

Through the Effectiveness of Peace Operations Network (EPON), two reports were published. The first one on  Misinformation, Disinformation, Malinformation and Hate Speech (MDMH) and its impact on the Effectiveness of UN Peacekeeping Operations (UN PKOs) draws on four UN PKOs as case studies and further analyses two UN PKOs to provide and understand context-specific examples of the rising challenges that UN PKOs encounter on issues of MDMH. The four UN PKOs the study focuses on include the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO); the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA); the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA); and the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The report identifies lessons and provides recommendations on how UN PKOs can broadly tackle MDMH and reinforce related efforts within these missions.

The second  report titled ‘A forgotten People in an Unstable Region – The Effectiveness of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei’, assesses the effectiveness of the United Nations Interim Security Force (UNISFA) mission in the region of Abyei in meeting its mandate, amidst emerging challenges. It provides a detailed update on the situation in the region from 2021 until December 2023, covering the transition from the departure of Ethiopian forces to the arrival and takeover of the UN Multinational Force.  The report provides an update on the situation in Abyei and examines whether the mission’s response is appropriate and adequate, given the current challenges at hand. It makes key recommendations for a shift towards more people-centred, community-led peacekeeping that adapts to the environment and evolving challenges, better communication about its mandate and timely engagement with communities, to cite a few.

Two publications – ‘Climate Security, natural resource conflict, and community resilience in the Lake Chad Basin: A Review of the Literature’ and ‘Unpacking the Nexus between Stablization and Climate, Peace and Security’ – dissect the pressing issue of climate change and its multiplier impact on pre-existing challenges in the Lake Chad Basin (LCB), and the linkages between stabilization, climate, peace and security, respectively. Both publications proffer recommendations on the need for;

  • Renewed thinking that blend traditional climate change adaptation practices with modern climate predictability systems for more impactful interventions;
  • Integrating and synthesizing the distinct areas of stabilization, climate, peace and security, into an adaptive stabilization approach in order to deal with instability and insecurity more comprehensively

Cover design of publication on Climate Security, natural resource conflict, and community resilience in the LCB: A Review of the Literature

In a monograph titled, ‘How effective is policing in protecting civilians in peace operations?’ – Lessons from the UN Mission in South Sudan, the role and effectiveness of UN Police in implementing the Protection of Civilians (PoC) mandate is examined, drawing on the lessons from the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The study, among others, recommends the establishment of a mission-wide integrated-information and intelligence-gathering and analysis system, and the inclusion of security sector reform in the UN Police mandate.
