Strengthening the AU PSOs mandates now and in the future; NUPI/TfP engage experts to document best practices and lessons learned during AMISOM´s 15-year operations in Somalia
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) was established by the African Union (AU) with a mandate to support the Federal Government of Somalia in its efforts to restore peace and stability to the country. AMISOM’s mandate includes providing security, stabilizing the political situation, and supporting the provision of basic services to the population.
Over the past 15 years, AMISOM has made significant contributions towards the restoration of peace and stability in Somalia, including the recovery of strategic towns and cities, the weakening of Al-Shabaab, and the extension of state authority, among others. However, significant challenges remain to be addressed, as The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) implements its mandate including consolidating gains made, transitioning to a Somali-led security arrangement, and establishing sustainable governance structures. As the AMISOM mandate ended on 31st March 2022, the AU Peace Support Operations Division (PSOD) with the support of NUPI/TfP, took the decision to conduct a comprehensive Lessons Learned Study to identify best practices that support vital recommendations that can assist the AU in its current and future efforts. NUPI/TfP is providing both financial and technical support in different ways towards this exercise and have engaged two senior consultants for the study, and facilitating their engagements, field visits and technical meetings with key stakeholders. When complete, this will position the AU to add to its knowledge capacity and support other African-led peace Support Operations (PSOs) with technical capacity. Finally, these lessons help to strengthen the Peace and Security Council’s capacity when mandating a PSO.
