Shaping discussions and preparations for the Summit of the Future

In the New Agenda for Peace (NAfP), UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres outlined his vision and essential shifts to enhancing worldwide cooperation and addressing multiple global crises.

In its preparation, ISS/TfP was recognized by the Interdepartmental Team overseeing the development of the NAfP as one of the few African organizations that submitted written contributions. The ISS contributed by integrating African perspectives. Additionally, ISS/TfP published analytical pieces through various channels, including reports, ISS Today and PSC Report articles. These efforts are part of ISS/TfP’s broader engagement in preparing for the Summit of the Future, ensuring that African priorities and perspectives are well-represented in the “Pact for the Future”.

To help facilitate the intergovernmental dialogue for the Pact for the Future, ISS/TfP collaborated with Center on International Cooperation (CIC) to conduct workshops from January to April and subsequently produced ISS/TfP and CIC joint policy briefs. These sessions offered analysis, contextual insights, and recommendations, which informed Member States’ negotiations on the zero draft of the Pact for the Future, focusing on the Peace and Security Chapter.

ISS/TfP also participated in the 2024 UN Civil Society Conference in Nairobi from May 9-10, organized by the UN Department of Global Communications in support of the Summit of the Future.

Pact for the Future: Inclusion of African perspectives and priorities workshop:

To address the limited engagement of African stakeholders in the Pact for the Future, ISS/TfP, in partnership with the ISS Africa Peace and Security Governance (APSG) programme and the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNoAU), organized a seminar titled “Enhancing Africa’s Voice on the Pact for the Future” on 21^st March 2024 in Addis Ababa.
