The 6th meeting of the African Policy Circle organised by the Agency for Co-operation and Research in Development (ACORD), Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and Botswana Association of Local Authorities (BALA) that took place in Gaborone, Botswana, brought together Think Tanks and Civil Society Organisations from across Africa to deliberate on the theme Tackling Inequalities Through Structural Reforms. The meeting developed a shared understanding of inequalities and identified root causes and consequences of inequalities, as well as ways to address them through structural reform. Furthermore, the meeting identified five key policy messages: redistributive fiscal policies (strengthening skills for domestic tax collection and capacity building); tackling structural inequalities; promoting and regulating the informal sector and improving revenue allocation for improved service delivery; removing barriers to encourage domestic private investments (Kenya is the suggested case study) and promoting inclusive economic growth by reaching out to socially marginalised groups, that participating organisations need to lobby governments on. Kgalalelo Nganje of the ISS was one of the rapporteurs and she also facilitated one of the plenary discussions that allowed participants to react to presentations and roundtable discussions. A complete monitoring and evaluation mechanism and toolkit is also in the process of being finalised. The initial training course is expected to take place in Kigali, Rwanda, in October 2017.
