TfP/ACCORD Supports key regional training centres of excellence on protection of civilians training
4 Dec 2012
The Training for Peace Programme at ACCORD (TfP/ACCORD) has contributed to training courses conducted by the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) on the Protection of Civilians (PoC). The courses aimed to enhance participants' capacities to plan, implement and PoC activities in Peacekeeping operations. The IPSTC Protection of Civilians courses were held from 2-13 July 2012 and 3-14 September 2012 respectively, in Nairobi, Kenya. Participants included middle level practitioners working in existing peacekeeping operations as well as those earmarked for deployment, including personnel associated with the stand-by forces or on peacekeeping rosters. TfP/ACCORD was represented by Mr. Zinurine Alghali, Peacekeeping Unit Coordinator, who facilitated a module on "Overview, Introduction and Concepts of Protection of Civilians" in July and September 2012, and an additional module on "Protection of Civilian Trend – the Case of the African Standby Force (ASF)" in September 2012. Participants were addressed on protection of civilians experiences in Africa, and gained an understanding of the various national, regional, and international legal and institutional framework available for protecting civilians from the adverse effects of conflicts in Africa, including both existing and emerging mechanisms. TfP/ACCORD's training support on PoC reflects the commitment to liaise with the key Regional Training Centres of Excellence on civilian and multidimensional training approaches for the successful implementation of peace operations within Africa, and is in line with the Programme's contribution to the development of the United Nations (UN) PoC Strategic Framework and the UN pre-deployment training curriculum on PoC, as well as the Draft African Union (AU) PoC Guidelines respectively. The Training for Peace Programme at ACCORD is an initiative funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
