KAIPTC hosts Orientation Workshop for Members of the Legislative Committees on Defense, Interior and Security in Selected African Countries

On the 15 to 18 December, 2013, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) under the auspices of the Training for Peace (TfP) in Africa Programme, held a two day orientation workshop on the theme: Legislative Oversight and the Security Sector: Challenges and Opportunities. The workshop took place at the Elmina Beach Resort, Ghana and brought together parliamentarians from Ghana, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sudan and Cote d’Ivoire. Other participants included representatives from the academia, Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, and APSTA. k The main objectives of the workshop were to: • Examine the role of the legislature and its oversight responsibilities with respect to the security sector; • Examine the challenges and opportunities of parliamentary oversight of the security sector; • Exchange country experiences ,best practices and lessons learnt on legislative oversight of the security sector; and • Discuss and identify ways to effectively implement UNSCR 1325 in the security sector particularly, in peace support operations. At the end of the workshop, participants were equipped with the requisite knowledge and understanding on how to effectively perform their oversight responsibilities over the security sector in their respective countries.
