ISS/TfP Researcher attends the African Peace Support Training Association Annual General Meeting

ISS/TfP senior researcher and training coordinator, Andre Roux, attended the APSTA AGM held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 8-10 December 2014. ISS/TfP has throughout 2014 been closely involved in several APSTA training developments.
The first day of this presentation began with views from Key Stakeholders regarding the African Standby Force (ASF) Training Needs Assessment (TNA) Study Lessons and Implementation; United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) brief on Partnerships and Collaboration; an International Humanitarian Law (IHL) dimension and perspective and discussions of the challenges programme. The next session entitled ‘Towards an African Training Architecture’, focused on a conceptual/practical African approach, Challenges of Information Sharing and UN Training Architecture. The day concluded with an Ideas Marketplace session.
Day two started with a session on Training to Protect - Concepts and Challenges and included presentations on the Civilian, Police and Military Dimension and an African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) Field Perspective. ISS presented a detailed brief on issues relating to the operational peacekeeping environment and development of competence, skills, knowledge and correct attitude for effective Police deployment to Peace Operations. This included knowing the environment, what to train for and how, how to develop training interventions as well as Institutional capacity development covering aspects such as training for sustainability, training products, Training of Trainers (ToTs), policies, resourcing, structures and capacity. In a later specialised session, ISS presented their new gender-training manual for police advisors in peace support operations and a presentation on how to advance UN Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace & Security and unpacking gender-training interventions that ISS TfP is doing with specialised gender training courses.
The Final day focused on the institutional aspects of APSTA and managing the program, membership, process and programs.
