In May 2017, ISS/TfP published a Policy Brief entitled Conflict Prevention: What’s in It for the African Union? The Policy Brief provided an overview of AU Conflict Prevention structures and recommendations on how conflict prevention can become more effective at the AU Commission level. As a means to increase the reach and impact of the Brief, ISS met with AU Commission staff to disseminate the findings of the Brief, as well as to engage on discussions regarding the role of the AU in mediation processes. The discussions will also inform a paper that is being prepared for 3rd Annual Conference on International Mediation, from 17-19 July 2017, organized by the Global South Mediation Unit, the University of Pretoria and Swiss Peace. Beyond providing an opportunity to discuss issues regarding conflict prevention and mediation at the AU, the meetings also enabled ISS/TfP to further identify potential areas of collaboration with the AU Department of Peace and Security.
