The ISS supported the AU PCRD in hosting a closed workshop to discuss its support to transitional justice in South Sudan through a combination of punitive, distributive and restorative efforts. The meeting brought together a number of transitional justice experts, as well as different AU departments including Peace and Security, Political Affairs, and the AUC Office of Legal Counsel. ISS chaired one of the sessions as well as presenting on “Opportunities for transitional justice and political dialogue.” ISS also disseminated a draft paper on South Sudan, which has subsequently incorporated comments and has been published: https://issafrica.org/research/east-africa-report/democratise-or-disintegrate-how-the-au-can-help-south-sudan. The PCRD unit advised the new AU Commissioner on the main points of the meeting and a working group was also established to follow up on the agreed way forward.
