ISS/TfP Senior Researcher, Mr Gustavo de Carvalho, conducted research in Bamako, Mali with colleagues from Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) and Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) on 12 – 17 May 2014 as part of the TfP Research Network. The study focused on the challenges in the African Union Peace Support Operations (AU PSOD) and the degree to which the role of police in AU operations differ from that in UN operations, and its implications for our assumptions, policies and training of police officers. The study will be comparative with case studies on the role of police in peace operations in the Sudan, Mali, and Somalia. Mr Gustavo also engaged in gathering data and information that enabled ISS/TfP to better understand wider aspects of the role of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) in relation to Mali’s peace process.
